Tsunami Warning [Jul. 15th, 2009|11:53 pm]

drakk

Thanks to an earthquake around 3 1/2 hours ago off the South Island of New Zealand, much of the East Coast of Australia including the East Coast of Tasmania has a Tsunami warning in effect as well as Hobart where i am. Our warning was for several hours from 9.30pm and with the exception of one waterfront bar closing, there seems to have been little reaction when i was at Hobart Port Area around 11pm with the exception of one waterfront bar that closed just in case.

Unconfirmed via a twitter post, Seven news is reporting the Tsunami measured at 12 cm high (a little under 5 inches) and Inundation is not expected according to ABC News.

(c)hobartdaily.com - A sign near the Hobart Rivulet in South Hobart

This sign is near the Hobart Rivulet in South Hobart as there is what would be described as a flood control weir type installation to reduce the chance of flash flooding.

I also thought it appropriate as i am back to work after some time off and eight months away doing a different job. Yikes.

And as i mentioned previously, the World Wide Photo Walk is this Saturday and if you are interested in joining the Hobart Walk, then please check out the Hobart Page of the World Wide Walk

Today’s photo is from Opossum Bay, a beachside town near the mouth of the Derwent. On a hot summer’s day it can be a great place to spend some time and some of the homes are literally next to the beach

Just Some Flowers … [Jul. 10th, 2009|06:25 pm]

(c)hobartdaily.com - Roadside Flowers at the Scene of a Crash at South Arm

Not much to show, just some flowers at the side of the road to mark the place where two people died yesterday on the South Arm Highway. It was part of a horror day on Tasmanian Roads where 9 people were killed in accidents on the State’s roads. To put it in perspective, the road toll for the whole of last year was I believe 48, so nine in a day is shocking and it seems unnecessary. People weren’t driving to the conditions, people were driving dangerously and some people were just unlucky, being killed by people not doing one of the first two.

So i am asking all my readers, take care on the roads and drive to the conditions. Some courtesy doesn’t hurt either. But don’t end up with just some flowers to mark where you died unnecessarily.

Again [Jul. 8th, 2009|09:30 pm]

pt
After a lot of minor and a few major dramas, my twelve month visa for France is almost a certainty. (Being told it will arrive in the mail in two weeks isn't quite certain enough for me.)

So in a touch over five weeks I leave home again and get into France at the end of August. The rough if-the-planets-align-and-luck-is-on-my-side plan once I get there is to potter about for a while and slowly work my way down towards the south coast. My biggest concern is work - I want some!

So if anyone reading this knows anyone that can get me any kind of work anywhere in France, please let me know. I'll pull pints in a pub, I'll paint houses, I'll pick grapes off a vine (actually that would be very cool) - anything! If you can help then please let me know or pass on my details. Email:pt @ livejournal.com

Because it's my last chance of getting any kind of working holiday visa, I'm renewing my Canadian visa and also applying for a visa for Denmark too. With Denmark I only have to apply before turning 31 (in Sept) whereas most of the other countries - including France - require me to enter the country before my birthday. If I can't find work in France and money is running out I'll head to Denmark in the hope of finding something there. If I'm still out of luck I'll end up back in Canada where I have a standing job invitation.

That's the (rough as guts) plan. Ideally I'll get to live in the south of France through to the northern spring in March/April and then find somewhere tropical'ish for the summer. Beyond that.. I have a few ideas but who the hell knows.
